Our physical presentation of the BEST ANTIPODEAN PHOTOBOOK as part of a satellite Melbourne Art Book Fair event was thwarted by the Queensland Government’s re-introduction of a lockdown after the discovery of local cases of COVID community transmission.
So – we went ahead with the LIVE STREAM component with the intention to present the physical books at a later time.
The team at KEPK – Thomas Oliver , Kyla Ingham , Miranda Everingham operated the technology and I presented a brief introduction followed by a look at, and a brief comment, about each of the ANTIPODEAN BEST PHOTOBOOKS of 2020.
The Live Stream was well attended.
I was also able to introduce the SELECTED ANTIPODEAN STUDENT PHOTOBOOKS List as well.
In my presentation I was able to make the following statements about this yearly ‘Best Books’project …
While the worldwide end of year crop of Best Photobook lists are usually replete with American/Euro/Japan centric publishers, this list is shamelessly biased towards Australian and New Zealand books. It presents the variety of book products from personal limited edition self-published projects to large volume trade books made by local photographers, publishers, designers and printers in the Australian and New Zealand region.
It is intended that through events such as this and the online list we will be able to present to an international audience a selection of photobooks from Australia and New Zealand and give an opportunity for these books and the stories they contain to have wider recognition in the larger world of photobooks.
THIS LIST INCLUDES BOOKS BY:
Julia Booth – Blanche Violet Maher,
Melanie Faith Dove,
Haruhiko Sameshima and
